Week 11: Running Daddy

5 May

What’s up with Liv?:  This week, all our girl wants to do is move!  She’s a total wiggle worm, twisting and squirming, her arms and legs flapping and flailing constantly.

Another constant, is her nonstop bubbles and drool soaking her clothes, fists, blankets, my shoulders, etc.

Liv’s had some exceptionally fussy evenings this week, but we’ve learned the sound of the exhaust fan in the bathroom calms her.  So I’m publicly admitting Liv’s taken a handful of naps in the bathroom this week.

Best of all, Liv’s started laughing out loud, which is the highlight of my whole life.  We spend 90% of her awake time trying to make her laugh.  Have I mentioned how much I love being Liv’s mom?

What I’m up to?:  It’s been quite a week!  Hubby ran the La Jolla Half Marathon on Sunday (his 20th half marathon!).  This was only my second time spectating and although it was a lot more difficult with an 11-week old baby (who still nurses every two hours), it was a blast.  Liv wore her Chicago Bears sleeper and let me show her off as all the runners zoomed by.  Jared even paused for a kiss at Mile 9 and a quick picture with his daughter.  I think she carried him through all 13.1 of those miles.

On Monday, I was still so fired up from the race, that Liv and I went for an 8 mile stroller run!  And on Tuesday, I finally got my wisdom teeth out after they decided to show up right when I got pregnant last May.  So basically, I haven’t eaten this much ice cream since I was pregnant!

Also new this week, I finally conquered my fear of the breast pump!  It took a couple hours to go through the cleaning, sterilizing, and assembly before I pumped Liv’s first bottle, which Jared promptly gave to her.  And she ate like a champ!  She’s had several more bottles through the week as I’ve been recovering from oral surgery and (knock on wood) it’s going really well.  Our girl just loves to eat any way she can get it!

Running Mama:  Another awesome highlight of the week was reuniting with my favorite run bud, Suzie, which inspired me to set some running/fitness goals for the month.

That, and I bought myself some new runners (happy early birthday to me)!

Week 11 Thoughts from the Zen Dad:

So much has happened in one, short week.  Liv is most certainly a time warp.  Sometimes, time seems to stand still.  Others, it flies by.

Last Sunday, I ran my 20th half marathon.  The La Jolla Half Marathon is one of my favorites and I’ve run it for four consecutive years.  Truthfully, I was incredibly nervous this go round.  I haven’t been training at all (maybe five runs since January), and this is a VERY hilly course (with over a mile running up Torrey Pines mountain).  The week prior to the race, I seriously debated dropping out.  The night before the race and even the morning OF the race, I was still considering it.  After a lot of hemming and hawing, I realized that I’ve been looking forward to this race since before Liv was born.  I kept reminding myself this would be memorable as my 20th half marathon and my first one as a Dad.  So there I was, the morning of the race, looking at my sleeping baby, realizing what better motivation is there to complete this run than to show my daughter you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.  The race was incredible, but nothing will ever measure up to seeing Meg holding Liv at mile 9.  I was so overwhelmed with excitement, I stopped racing and grabbed Liv for a mini photo shoot.  Not only was it the highlight of my week, it was one of the highlights of my life.

Running daddy, 4/28/2013

Half marathon daddy, 4/28/2013

Just when I thought this week couldn’t get any better, Meg worked up the courage to tackle the pump.  Know what that means?  DADDY GETS TO FEED THE BABY!!!  Holding her in my arms as she took her bottle and looked me square in the eyes was unlike anything I can begin to describe.  It was as if she was talking to me, deep in my soul.  Since then, I’ve fed her a handful of times and each time is equally as amazing.

I feel so grateful to have such an amazing daughter and amazing wife.  Week 11 rocked my world.

Breathing in, I connect deeply.
Breathing out, I inspire.

Week 11 in Review:

  • Liv loves:  Music, nursing herself to sleep, staring at herself in the mirror
  • Liv hates:  Getting too hot, having her nails clipped
  • This week’s firsts:  First time spectating at a race, first bottle
  • This week’s almost first:  Liv hates tummy time so much, she’s almost rolled herself over a few times!
  • Workouts:  2 walks, 3 stroller runs = 16.5 miles
  • 1st post-baby race:  22 days
  • 1st post-baby half-marathon:  29 days
  • Highlight of the week:  Watching Jared give Liv her first bottle.  And watching Liv stare up at her daddy with big, bright eyes, as if to say: “Thank you, daddy.”

8 weeks and 8 years

12 Apr

I meant to write Liv’s 8 week recap today, but after her pediatrician appointment this morning, Jared and I decided we should take a road trip up to Costa Mesa to celebrate our 8 year (dating) anniversary at Maggiano’s!

I wrote a couple mushy-gushy posts last year to celebrate our second wedding anniversary (our “Valentine-iversary“) and our seventh dating anniversary, so this year, I’m keeping it simple.  Jared and I went through our online photo albums and picked out one picture per year, which took A LOT longer than I anticipated, but was a fun trip down memory lane…

Week 40: Due date day!

14 Feb

***I wrote this post on Tuesday morning, 2/12/2013, while having (what I convinced myself were) my usual Braxton Hicks contractions… (because babies are never born on their actual due date, right…?)  At 7:03pm, on our due date, “Bob” was born!  But before we get to what I know you all really want to hear about, here’s my Week 40 recap...

I just got a weekly email from BabyCenter.com that says: You’re 40 weeks pregnant – your baby is due!

Several weeks ago, I was betting Bob would be here by now, but today’s our “official” due date.  And I’m most definitely still pregnant.

Sully and Bob at 40 weeks pregnant, 2/10/2013

Sully and Bob at 40 weeks, 2/10/2013

Did you know only 5% of babies are born on their actual “due date”?  That 50% of mom’s go past their due date?  And the average first-time mom delivers at 41 weeks & 1 day?!

What’s Bob up to?:  At 40 weeks, the average newborn is 20 inches long and weighs 7.5 pounds.  Although I’m so excited and anxious to meet Bob, I feel blessed to have carried this little one to term.  It feels good to know that when our baby does finally arrive, he or she should be more than ready to face the world.

What I’m up to?:  Maternity leave has been SO good to me.  Sleep is still difficult — it’s like moving mountains to get comfortable with my swarm of pillows.  And I’m up to pee 5 to 9 times per night (ugh).  BUT, I’m able to sleep in!  I’ve been going to bed by 10:00 PM and getting up for the day around 9:00 AM.  Plus, I can nap!

In between trying to get as much rest as possible, I’m (still) busying myself around the house doing “housewifey things,” like scrubbing the microwave, toaster oven, and oven range, organizing every last closet and drawer in the house, boiling cloth diapers (to use as burp cloths), and reading that 576-page book on breastfeeding (which is a really, really great resource, by the way).

I’ve never had a strong feeling that Sully knows anything’s up.  His behavior hasn’t really changed at all over the past nine months… until the last week or so.  Seemingly overnight, he became my little shadow, wanting to cuddle and be right next to me all the time.  In the past, he’d be sprawled out on one of the other couches or on one of his doggie mats, but lately, he just wants his paw and/or head in my lap.

Sully and Bob hanging out, 40 weeks, 2/10/2013

Sully and Bob hanging out, 40 weeks, 2/10/2013

How I’m feeling?:  Patient, excited, and maybe just a tad bit skeptical that Bob’s ever coming out…

Bob on the Move:  On Sunday morning, I got it in my head that I wanted to go for a run, because I think it’d be fun to be able to say: “And I went for a run the day you were born!”  Apparently, my “running” is pretty awkward by now, because hubby described it as a humorous, wide-legged waddle, ha!  And honestly, it didn’t feel all that good, so yesterday, I simply went for a long walk with Sully.  Otherwise, my exercise has been limited to housework and hauling this big belly to the bathroom every hour.  And seriously, getting up from bed or off the couch is work!

Week 40 Thoughts from the Zen Dad:

Well… we’re in the home stretch.  It could be any day now!  In fact, I thought it was going to happen yesterday, February 11th.  I can’t believe that I’m going to get to meet my baby OH SO SOON!!!  Truly, words cannot express how excited I am.  I wish I could write more, but there are some other things I need to tend to.  BOB… just know, you are so loved, and Mommy and I have great support in anticipation for your arrival.  Mommy’s strength and determination is going to bring you safely into this world as a healthy, beautiful, little baby.  Hope to see you soon!

Week 40 in Review:

  • Weight gained:  17 (ish) lbs.
  • Workouts:  1 run, 1 walk, and hauling this extra 17 lbs. around!
  • Symptoms:  Braxton Hicks, low back pain, knocking over displays at the grocery with my big belly…
  • Favorite foods of the week:  Rocky road, caramel fudge swirl, mocha almond fudge… really digging ice cream lately (which may be more of a comfort food thing than a craving, but we can pretend…)
  • Fun moment of the week:  Yesterday, we met our new neighbor, Marge, who asked when I’m due.  I said, “Tomorrow,” to which she shrieked: “WHAT?!?!”  – Ha!  That was fun.
  • What I’m looking forward to…  Anytime I feel nervous, not ready, anxious, or any kind of not-so-positive emotion, I visualize that moment when we first meet Bob — when he or she is finally here, in my arms, and I can look into his or her eyes.  Can’t wait…

***Birth story coming ASAP!  In the meantime, and because I’d hate to leave anyone hanging another second…

Week 38: Carlsbad Half

27 Jan

Today, hubby ran — and rocked! — his 19th half marathon (no big deal)!

Carlsbad Half Marathon FINISHER! 1/27/2013

Carlsbad Half Marathon FINISHER! 1/27/2013

Several months ago, when the Carlsbad Half Marathon was getting close to selling out, I seriously considered registering.  Being here, now, with this big ol’ bump, our “due date” just two weeks away, and knowing our little one could be born any day…  Well, I made the right decision in not signing up.

And so I got to be a spectator at one of Jared’s races for the first time ever!

We were on our way to Carlsbad by 6:15am.  The clouds looked ominous, but luckily, it didn’t rain!  Spectating was really emotional for me (I blame Bob).  I got to see the first female marathoners fly through Mile 22 — literally, they weren’t running!  I swear, they were flying!

I saw first-time marathoners, stroller runners, cancer survivors, and hundreds of courageous, determined people, reinforcing and reminding me of the infinite reasons I love running so much.  I cried a bunch.

Hubby stopped for a photo at Mile 8.5, 1/27/2013

Hubby stopped for a photo at Mile 8.5, 1/27/2013

…especially when I saw hubby.

I couldn’t be more proud of him!!  His training included: walking Sully every day, waiting on his pregnant wife hand-and-foot (also daily, ha!), a few short runs, and only two long runs.  Despite everything we have going on right now, he absolutely killed it.  I managed to see him at miles 4.5, 8.5, and 13.0, and he was smiling and having a blast the whole way!

I tried to be funny by cheering with a poster that Jared got a huge kick out of…

Totally joking! 1/27/2013

“Run faster, hubby, my water broke!”  1/27/2013

But the sign may have freaked out a few runners and nearby spectators, ha!

No baby yet!!  (Hopefully we do have a couple more weeks…)  But our little Bob will be here soon.  And I think that’s why today’s race was extra special and emotional and awesome.  Even from the sidelines.

Seven Years

12 Apr

Now that we’re married, I think we’re supposed to switch over to celebrating our wedding anniversaries, but I can’t look at April 12 on the calendar without thinking about the fact that today is the anniversary of our beginning—when we first started dating—and that seven years ago today was the best day of my life.

Seven years, bubs, can you believe it?  Maybe you can because you’re always exaggerating how long we’ve been together (i.e. two years and 2 months into our marriage and you’re already telling people: “We’ve been married almost three years!”), but it’s hard for me to believe.  Seven years is a long time.  I guess the best times always fly by, don’t they?  Seven years ago, we started daydreaming about a future together—becoming dog owners, living in California, getting married, and having kids, among other dreams…

In seven years, we’ve graduated from college, cruised around the world, lived in Phoenix, ran our first of so many half marathons, got engaged in the middle of the night, adopted a 90 pound bundle of unconditional love, sold everything and moved to San Diego, lived in a cave (okay, it was actually a multi-family house that was basically a cave), ran our first of many full marathons, moved into an actual house, where we lived without furniture for almost a year, got married on the beach, honeymooned in Maui, settled into married life as “The Luries,” and, well, continued to live out our happily ever after.

Life has been beautifully stable for a couple years now (or almost three years, to you), and I’m grateful every day.

We still drive down streets lined with palm trees and watch breathtaking sunsets, marveling at the fact that we actually live here, in paradise.  We still have moments when we look at each other and say: “Wow, we’re really married…”  And getting nudged out of bed each morning by our big, floppy dog still makes me chuckle because we’re living out our dreams.  I know you’re exploding-at-the-seams excited for the next chapter of our happily-ever-after, but if I’ve learned anything in our seven years together, it’s not to rush.  Life is a dream and every day is the new best day of my life.  So today, let’s remember where we started…

And I thought I loved you then

Valentine-iversary #2

14 Feb

Today’s Valentine’s Day, which never really meant much to me until a couple years ago, when I married my best friend.  Now it’s kinda sorta special and stuff…

You’ve probably heard a thing or two about Jared in my previous posts: he’s my totally rad roommate, who always cleans the toilet and gives the world’s best bear hugs and runs or spectates at the bazillion-gajillion races I run!

I most often refer to him as hub, hubs or hubby, bubs, bubsie, J, Jarebear, Jerry, kitty, worm (he gave himself that one), and monkey, though I’m pretty sure he’s mostly human…

mymonkey

We met at Miami University (of Ohio!), during my senior year, when I was blonde and he was Casper…

I wasn’t looking for anything serious, so naturally, we were immediately, seriously, and hilariously in love.

In 2007, Miami finally issued Jared a dipolma and he shipped off to work on a cruise ship as a “professional” a cappella singer.  I swear I’m not making this up!  I put “professional” in quotes because it was basically the most ridiculously fun, awesome “job” ever.  He got paid to sail around the world with his closest buddies, singing for guests and livin’ the dream.

I missed him yadda yadda yadda, BUT I got to visit him in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Alaska, which was so unforgettably awesome-sauce.  And in 2008, we settled down in Phoenix, got engaged and adopted a ginormous bloodhound (who’s the other love of my life).

sullyfamily

2009 was an equally eventful year, as we relocated to San Diego, started new jobs, ran our first marathon and dove into wedding planning.

Marathon Finish

On Valentine’s Day, 2010, we got married in a shoes-optional-ceremony on the beach in Carlsbad, surrounded by our closest friends and family.  And soon after, we were double-fisting cupcakes and Jersey-style fist-pumping our way through our reception.  The next morning, we jetted off to Maui for our honeymoon oh-my-goonies-we’re-really-married week-long party.

Now, we’re just a couple of old married farts.  Okay, not really.  I’m the old one and he’s the fart.  We’re living out our happily-ever-after by adding to our ridiculously long list of nicknames for each other, running as many races as we can fit into our schedules as I can trick him into registering for… and being our eternally silly-billy selves.

We are sooo looking forward to having children so we can pawn off the chores on them.  Housework totally cramps our fun-loving style.

Santa Clarita Marathon Recap

8 Nov

When I woke up on marathon morning and it was already pouring rain, I lost every bit of confidence I’d built up the night before.  But there was no turning back.  We layered up and took off for the start.  We bypassed the long line of cars waiting to park in the covered garages at the mall and found an uncovered parking spot a few steps from the start line.  We waited in the car until the last minute, then braved the rain for the national anthem (during which, Sully let out an adorable howl, as though he was trying to sing along) and I was off, as Jared hollered: “Own every mile!”

Look, mom! I wore your gloves!

We tried to get a family shot at the start, but Sully was too freaked out by the crowds to stay still.

Honestly, I was pretty miserable running in the rain for the first several miles.  I’m not used to running in the cold and it took me several miles to warm up and get in somewhat of a rhythm, but I knew my pace was slower than 4-hour marathon pace and I let go of that goal by deciding not to even look at my Garmin for time or pace.

Just past Mile 4 was the first time I saw Jared & Sully, who let out a long howl as I ran by :)

At least my shoulders are dry, ha!

Despite the crummy weather, I really can’t say enough great things about this event.  I really loved the course, which basically consisted of four loops.  First, we did a loop to the southwest, headed north, then southeast, and finished with an out-and-back to the east (which wasn’t so awesome, but those final miles never are).  We mostly ran along wide sidewalks and trails–rarely on roads–and I savored every minute of running through the wooded areas, where pine needles blanketed the pathways and trees changing color created tunnels for us to run through.  There were sparse, sandy stretches, where we ran out into nothingness with breathtaking views of mountains in the background.  Although the rain let up in the first 10 miles, my shoes were waterlogged the entire way as I kept plowing straight into puddles because I had my eyes up the whole way.  Again, I loved the course.  And even when I got to the really tough, gritty, final miles, I found myself thinking I want to come back next year–AND I think my dad should run with me, because he’d love it too.

Another huge pro for the course–Jared & Sully were able to see me TEN separate times!!!!  We printed off some maps of Santa Clarita the night before, but it’s hard to predict what traffic will be like with road closures, so Jared didn’t have a plan and I had no clues as to where I would see him.  But because we were running on sidewalks and trails, there were few (if any) complete road closures, so Jared zipped all over Santa Clarita with no problem!

At mile 13, I handed off my long sleeved shirt to Jared and finally got to rock my Maniac tank!

The sun came out for a few miles!  Miles 13-18 were some of my favorites because we ran through the woodsiest areas AND because mile 16 in the marathon is a milestone for me.  At mile 16, there are only 10 miles to go–and 10 miles is nothing compared to 26.  10 miles, I can do before work.  Plus, there was the sunshine, which was a lifesaver!

See? Mile 18 and I'm still smiling in the sunshine!

I’m really proud of the slow-but-steady race I ran up until mile 19, where things started falling apart… big time.  Miles 19-23 included a lonely and boring out-and-back stretch.  Jared drove in this direction, looking for a place to spectate, but the path was off the main roads, so that’s why there were so few spectators along this stretch.  And like I said, it was just plain boring.  When I got to mile 20, I was so ready to be done.  I was teary and emotional and walked and ran a bit of mile 20 with Jared and Sully before Sully popped a squat in the dirt and I took that as my cue to run on.  I hung in there until mile 22, which is the long training run I would’ve done for Vegas in four weeks, so after I hit 22, mentally, I was really and truly done.

I kept telling myself: only four more miles, but those last four were some of the longest, hardest miles of my life.  My left calf was aching and painful.  I’d only had two gels all day and I couldn’t bear the thought of taking another one, so I kept choking down Gatorade at the aid stations (I really need to figure out what nutrition plan works for me).  I saw Jared for the last time at mile 23.  I stopped to give him a kiss and rub Sully’s head for good luck.  I ran off with tears in my eyes as Jared yelled, “Remember what you’re running for.”

At mile 24, I was so grateful to run into another Maniac and we ran a mile together, chatting about what marathons we’d run (Santa Clarita was his 51st!) and what was up next.  Neither of us had the day that we wanted, but with marathons, there are just so many volatile variables (like weather and emotions and glycogen uptake).  With less than a mile to go, he told me to run ahead and I kept going, vowing that I would run the entire last mile with absolutely no walking.

The last mile included two paseo bridges over main roads and boy-oh-boy those inclines onto the bridges were BRUTAL.  My calf was feeling worse, but the promise of a finish line around the corner propelled me forward.  A kids’ fun run was taking place in that final stretch, so three-and-half foot bundles of energy were zipping by me left and right, running their adorable little hearts out, and while I was running on fumes, it gave me such a boost.

And then I saw the clown (or jester?) and then there was Jared and Sully, who stepped out onto the course with me and said, “We’re running with you!”  Jared handed me Sully’s leash and although he was freaked out by the cheers and screams of spectators, he ran with me, and Jared fell back, taking a video of the finish.  I crossed the finish line and did what I absolutely hate that other runners do: I stopped immediately.

Official splits:

  • 5.5 Mile: 52:08 (9:29/mile)
  • 15.3 Mile: 2:26:48 (9:36/mile)
  • 21.5 Mile: 3:31:00 (9:49/mile)
  • Finish: 4:28:14 (10:14/mile)

With my eleventh marathon medal dangling around my very tired neck, Jared guided me to the finisher’s area where they had Clif bars, Larabars, bananas, water, and some other drinks.  I hoarded Larabars as we chatted with my Maniac running buddy.  A band was playing and families buzzed around, celebrating their finishes, whether it was the kids’ fun run, the 5K (where there were 1193 finishers), the half marathon (1306 finishers) or the full daddy (390 finishers).  The sun was gone and although it wasn’t raining, it was windy, and I got really chilly, really fast, so we didn’t linger.

I stretched out at the car with Sully, while Jared ran over to Chipotle to get us lunch and we headed back to the hotel to shower, eat and chill before the two-and-a-half hour drive back to San Diego.

It wasn’t my best performance, but it was a perfect long training run for Vegas.  And it was an absolutely perfect day, where I owned every mile–even the really grisly ones… not to mention the fact that I have The Best Hubby in the World!

Marathon #11 = check!

Own every mile.

6 Nov

It’s 10pm on Saturday night.  Daylight Savings Time ends at midnight, which, as a kid, meant staying up an hour later than usual.  As an old fart, it means an extra hour of sleep!  Heck yes!  Tomorrow is the New York City Marathon, which I dream of running… one day.  And while that monster of a run is going on, I’ll be running an itsy-bitsy marathon in the absolutely adorable town of Santa Clarita, California.

Jared, Sully, and I arrived in SC at 3:00 this afternoon with only two hours left of the race expo.  I didn’t register in advance, so had to swipe my driver’s license at a computer onsite and was given bib #468.  As a volunteer was running my credit card, I asked how many participants they were expecting this year and he handed me my receipt and said, “Well, there are at least 468 marathoners.”  Thanks, buddy.

Anyhow, weather.com is predicting temps in the 40s and non-stop rain.  Nice try, mother nature, I’ve been through this before.  Nonetheless, I’m predicting an absolutely unforgettable day.  And I am ready!

Today, special thanks goes to my husband, my biggest fan.  When we left San Diego this afternoon, I said: “Okay, let’s go run a marathon!”  Because, although he won’t be running this event, truly, I couldn’t do this without him.  He knows better than anyone what running means to me.  That it’s about conquering fear.  That defeat is optional.  That I own every mile.  And when I run, I’m free.

Also, there’s truth in the saying: “A happy wife is a happy life.”  So thank you, bubs, for keeping me happy.  Thank you for driving my car to the gas station to fill up on Thursday morning before work, so I didn’t have to rush (more than normal).  Thank you for spending hours troubleshooting with tech support so I’ll have music on my iPod tomorrow morning.  Thank you for making the 148 mile drive to Santa Clarita, even though you were tired, because you know I hate driving.  And thank you for being so overwhelmingly proud of me, always.  I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I am, and will continue to be, grateful for every moment with you.  Always.  Even when you stink up our hotel room and try to blame it on Sully.

I love you, gas man.  I can’t wait to hug you at the finish line.  Again.

We put the PR in Pride 5K

17 Jul
Hubby and I decided to run the Run and Stride with Pride 5K late yesterday, so we could stick around for San Diego’s Pride Parade.  Since it was a last minute decision AND because I ran a hard 5 mile tempo run yesterday morning, I really wasn’t expecting much from this race…

BUT I smoked my 5K PR by more than a minute and placed 1st in my division (once again proving I race best when I have low expectations)!!!!

Mile 1:  7:50
Mile 2:  7:48
Mile 3:  7:43
Last 0.1 mile:  0:47 (7:28/mile)
Garmin Results:  3.11 miles, 24:09 (7:46/mile)

Official Finish:  3.1 miles, 24:10 (7:47/mile)!!!!
Overall:  80 out of 327
Women:  13 out of 173
F 25-29:  1 out of 38 — 1st time I’ve ever placed!!!!
The post-race awards ceremony when Jared realized I placed!
About to start jumping up & down…
Please excuse my boob sweat…

Hubby also busted out a PR despite: 1) having a pulled groin (he calls it a “hurtie”) from playing indoor volleyball, 2) racing with the camera, and 3) pausing to take 846 billion pictures along the way.

We scooped up our race goodies, then found a place to watch the Pride Parade, which rocked and was (obviously) full of rainbows:
We saw a bunch of these signs & one that said: “I heart my straight mom.” :)

What a day!  And since it’s almost 7:00pm… I guess I should finally shower and ice that nagging shin splint before tomorrow’s nice and easy, long, slow run!

Peace!
